N°02 — The project
When one material does all the work, the room can finally be quiet.
A single material
The apartment occupies the fourth floor of a 1920s building in Chamberí. Years of renovation had left it a patchwork of finishes. We removed every one and rebuilt the interior from a single stone: a vein-cut travertine from a quarry near Albacete, chosen for its horizontal banding.
Walls, floors, kitchen and bathrooms are clad in the same material, the bands aligned across every surface so that the rooms read as if carved from one block. Doors are flush, cupboards are hidden, and the only other materials are pale oak and bronze.
Light through the stone
A new skylight above the central corridor washes the travertine from above. Its pores and bands come alive at midday and almost disappear in the evening, when concealed lights along the floor take over.
